There are many compelling reasons why you should never elect a radical leftist. Chief among these is their complete misunderstanding of how and why to fight a war. At the very least, I knew McCain as POTUS would stand up for our troops. Obama...not so much.
Apparently our rules of engagement (ROE) have been changing in Afghanistan. We can only guess who is making these important decisions in DC. I am sure it is someone with years of combat experience who clearly understands the global threat of radical islam and the strategic importance of our forces currently deployed in Afghanistan.
It seems our Marines and Afghan allies were ambushed in a well-planned attack. When our troops called in for artillery or air support they were denied. Here is the money quote from the story.
U.S. commanders, citing new rules to avoid civilian casualties, rejected repeated calls to unleash artillery rounds at attackers dug into the slopes and tree lines — despite being told repeatedly that they weren't near the village.

Four Marines and several Afghan soldiers died needlessly because some bureaucrat thought he/she could fight a "friendlier and safer" war. War is messy. But it gets even bloodier when intellectuals, pinheads and politicians suddenly think they are the second coming Julius Caesar.
